Braces in Lawrenceville, NJ

Our dedicated team is here to guide you through each step of the process, from the initial consultation to the final reveal of your new smile. We believe in a patient-centered approach, where your comfort and preferences are at the forefront of everything we do.

Types of Braces

Each type of brace has benefits, and understanding them can help you make an informed choice. We have an option that aligns with your unique smile goals!

Traditional Metal Braces

These classic braces are what most people envision when they think of orthodontic treatment — strong metal brackets and wires that work together to gradually shift teeth into their ideal positions.

One of the key advantages of traditional metal braces is their strength. Designed to withstand the stressors of everyday life, they are an excellent choice for patients of all ages, particularly those who may be concerned about the durability of their orthodontic appliances. If you’re looking for cost-effective braces in Lawrenceville, NJ, this might be the perfect option for you!

Ceramic Braces

Crafted to match the natural color of your teeth, these braces offer a subtlety that allows for a more aesthetic approach to teeth straightening. Ceramic braces function in much the same way as their metal counterparts, utilizing brackets and wires to apply consistent pressure that gradually moves teeth into alignment.

While ceramic braces are more discreet, they don’t compromise on strength or efficiency. They are suitable for treating a wide array of orthodontic issues. If you’re conscious about the visibility of your braces, ceramic braces could be the ideal choice.

Self-Ligating Braces

Self-ligating braces offer a modern twist on orthodontic treatment by utilizing a specialized clip in place of the traditional elastics to hold the wire. This innovative design allows for the brackets to be less conspicuous and easier to clean, as there are fewer components that can trap food.

Additionally, removing the need for the elastics reduces the amount of friction teeth feel, which means more a more comfortable and efficient treatment in fewer appointments. This makes self-ligating braces a popular choice for those seeking a discreet and convenient orthodontic solution.

Components of Braces and How They Work

Braces are made up of several parts that work together to achieve the desired results.

Brackets

These small attachments are the foundation of your braces. Made from durable metal or ceramic, brackets are carefully bonded to each tooth. They serve as anchors for the wires and are the points of control that allow for precise movements of your teeth.

Wires

Wires are thin pieces of specially designed metal that are threaded through the brackets. They are responsible for applying the gentle, consistent pressure needed to guide your teeth into their correct positions over time.

Rubber Bands

Rubber Bands are a crucial component for anchoring the entire braces system securely to your teeth. For those looking to add a splash of personality to their braces, colored rubber bands are available to customize your look.

Patient’s Choice

While we provide guidance based on your specific needs, your preferences matter. We encourage open communication to ensure you are comfortable and actively involved in the decision-making process.

Customization Options

With a variety of colored rubber bands to choose from, you can personalize your braces to reflect your unique style. For those seeking a more understated approach, we offer accessories and options that maintain a low profile while still providing exceptional results.

Braces vs. Invisible Aligners

The choice between traditional braces and Invisalign often depends on the specific goal of your treatment. While braces may be necessary for precise tooth movement, Invisalign offers a flexible alternative. We’ll work with you to determine the most effective option, ensuring the best result for your smile.

Braces FAQ

When is a good time to have children evaluated for braces?

An orthodontic evaluation can happen at any time, but the American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children have an evaluation no later than age 7. Orthodontic treatment is often unnecessary at this age, but the screening allows diagnosis of early problems which can often be treated easily — and helps to avoid future permanent tooth extractions or dental surgeries.

What can I expect during my braces treatment?

Braces (or any orthodontic treatment) can make people anxious. Most people get braces only once and are not sure what to expect. There is no need to prepare for getting your braces visit other than cleaning your teeth as best as possible. Dr. Callan will discuss the process with you and answer all of your questions.

Braces work very much like stickers – for your teeth. Like stickers, braces have an adhesive padding that will stick nicely to the tooth surface. Placing braces first requires the teeth to be cleaned of residual debris/plaque and dried thoroughly. The braces are then placed over your teeth, with each tooth receiving a custom brace designed specifically for that tooth.

Will I experience any pain or discomfort during the treatment?

The process is not painful at all! There is no drilling, numbing medicine, or needles involved. Getting braces here in Lawrenceville, NJ couldn’t be easier; you may find the hardest part is waiting patiently to see what they look like!

After the braces are placed (which takes approximately 30-40 minutes) the wires are inserted through the braces and everything is tied together with a small rubber band. These rubber bands are changed every visit and come in many different colors.

What type of care do braces require after they’re applied?

Dr. Callan will discuss everything you need to know about wearing and taking care of your braces. We will go over foods you should avoid, hygiene tips to keep your mouth clean, and what to expect in the first few days with braces.

As always, if you have any questions, you are encouraged to ask or call our office at any time.

What happens after I get my braces removed?

Teeth have memory. They will always want to go back to where they came from. Once crowded teeth will tend to crowd again, while teeth that were spaced apart will begin spacing. As important as it is to align teeth ideally, it is equally important to keep them in their position. This is done with a retainer after treatment.

Every patient will receive a retainer, which is usually worn when sleeping to maintain proper alignment. Dr. Callan will discuss how to maintain your new smile.

Will I need to have teeth extracted for braces?

Removing teeth is sometimes required to achieve the best orthodontic result. Straight teeth and a balanced facial profile are the goals of orthodontics. However, because new technology has provided advanced orthodontic procedures, removing teeth is not always necessary for orthodontic treatment.

How long will I need to wear my braces?

Treatment time depends on each patient’s specific orthodontic problem. In general, treatment time lasts from 8-30 months. The “average” time frame for braces is approximately 18-24 months.

How much will braces cost? Are financing options available? How does my insurance work?

It is impossible to give an exact cost for treatment until we have examined you. We will cover the exact cost and financial options during the initial examination. After the examination, we’ll review our financing options with you and help you choose the one that best accommodates your needs. We will also review your insurance policy, helping you maximize your benefits and file claims on your behalf.

How often will I have appointments?

Appointments are scheduled according to each patient’s needs. Most patients with braces will be seen every 4-8 weeks. If there are specific situations that require more frequent monitoring, we will schedule appointments accordingly.

Can I wear braces even though I have crowns and missing teeth?

Yes! A tooth with a crown will move just like a tooth with a simple filling. When teeth are missing, orthodontic treatment will aid in aligning the rest.

Can I return to school the day I receive my braces?

Absolutely! There is no reason you cannot return to school the same day.

Do you use recycled braces?

Definitely not! It is our belief that each individual should be provided with their own braces to achieve the best orthodontic result possible.  Even if a brace breaks, it will be replaced with a new one.

Do I need to see my family dentist while in braces?

Yes! Regular checkups with your family dentist are important while in braces. Your family dentist will determine the intervals between cleanings while you are in braces.

How often should I brush my teeth while in braces?

You should brush at least four times each day while in braces – after each meal and before going to bed. We will show you how to floss your teeth with braces and may also provide a prescription for a special fluoride, if necessary.

Is it too late to have braces if I am already an adult?

Even adults can benefit from getting braces. In fact, 25% of all orthodontic patients are adults. Health, happiness, and self-esteem are vitally important to adults. No patient is “too old” to wear braces!

My partner hasn't even started the treatment yet but this 5 star goes to Monica at the front desk. Have never talked to someone as kind, caring and helpful as her. She goes out of the way to help you, even late in the evening. Can't say enough good things about her. Thank you Monica, for bringing so much kindness into our lives :)And we've seen Dr. Callan just once so far (first of many!) but he seems very gentle as well. And he didn't make us feel rushed at all. Would highly recommend this place.

So friendly and welcoming very professional also make every question you need to ask so easy to understand.
Dr.Callan is an absolute great orthodontist. The compassion, empathy, and patience he had for my son today was worth more then a google review. He took his time and let my son breath and take breaks while getting a palet expander placed. I strongly recommend him for any child that is apprehensive or nervous about any orthodontic procedures. He explains everything and reassures their fears. Amazing experience! Thank you to his staff as well. They showed the same amount of compassion.
